It's strange, that a dark as complete as this should feel unnatural; metaphorically he's moved within it often enough, but every so often, it seems, the world takes pains to remind Grantaire of the distance between the metaphorical and the literal.

The sound of his own voice, though no comfort, is familiar, at least. "How hard a thing it is to tell," he mutters, "what is this rough, wild and dense wood --"

-- and then the sound of his own voice is augmented by the noise of something moving, not far off.

Well. Maybe it's a wolf, and maybe it's a rabbit with teeth; it's all one to Grantaire. He pitches his voice to carry. "Art thou then that Virgil and that fount which poureth forth so large a stream of speech?"
