Is the present tense the wrong tense? Possibly -- but to use any other would feel worse. In any case, Grantaire tells himself, it would be dishonest for the dead to put the dead behind them.

"Combeferre would say, nature is beautiful; I don't dispute it in the least, it's the most beautiful things in the world that are the most unkind. Every poet and every philosopher knows that."

Grantaire's ramblings are pitched a little loudly, even for him; the silence is too silent, the darkness too dark, and it's hard to shake the sense that something shadowy is slipping away beyond their field of vision.
